A pool safety cover will protect your family and pets as well as keep out leaves and other debris, making spring cleanup much easier. A pool safety cover will also eliminate standing water helping prevent mosquitoes and other water pests.
A pool safety cover is not the same thing as a winter cover, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy either. A winter or water-bag cover floats on the surface and is held down around the edge by weight. A safety cover is anchored into the deck itself and is held under tension across the pool, so it stays put and does not sag into the water. That anchoring is the whole point: it is what keeps the cover in place through a storm, and what makes it a barrier rather than a lid.
Safety covers come in two broad types, and which one suits you depends mostly on how much you mind cleaning versus how much light you want to keep out.
Both anchor the same way and both are made to the shape of your pool. We will talk through which makes more sense for your pool and how you use it when we come out.
Like a liner, a safety cover is manufactured for one specific pool. A rectangle is straightforward; a freeform pool, a pool with a tanning ledge, corner steps, a raised wall or a diving board needs the cover cut around those features, which is why the measurement matters more than anything else in the order.
Anchors are set into the deck around the perimeter, spaced so the tension is even across the whole cover. In concrete or paver decking they sit flush and screw down out of the way when the cover is off, so there is nothing to trip over in summer. Straps run from the cover to each anchor and are tensioned with a simple tool, which is also how the cover comes off and goes back on each season.
Most safety covers go on at closing, at the end of the swimming season, and that is the natural time to have one measured and fitted. It is worth ordering earlier in the year than you think, though: a custom cover has to be manufactured, and the weeks either side of closing season are the busiest. If you are having a vinyl pool liner replacement done as well, the two jobs are worth scheduling together while we are already measuring the pool.
